Country living as one of eight children proved to be adventurous and educational. I think we could accurately call Mom's life a survival story. She dropped out of elementary school in order to milk cows, feed chickens and even plow the ground with the family's horse. Bernice started helping the family make a living after her father left. She was about 16 when she became a waitress at the Oasis restaurant in Ardmore. In her early 20's she met and married a young man from east Texas, Jack Dauphin. Their marriage lasted for 63 years until Jack passed away in 2000. After getting married, the Dauphins lived in Illinois, Texas, New Mexico, Mississippi, and Saskatchewan, Canada before settling in Shafter, California for more than 40 years. During those early years Bernice was a dressmaker extraordinaire. She worked running cafes, baking pies to sell, picking cotton, and more, with a great determination to help the family. The many moves, raising three children, and the hard work were all factors in Bernice's story of survival. Through the trials that life can bring Bernice had trusted in Jesus Christ and living a life pleasing to God had become her focus. She enjoyed studying the Bible, writing Christian songs, playing the piano and painting landscapes and seascapes. She also loved fishing and became an earnest golfer in her late fifties. Bernice loved her family that had increased to ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She is survived by daughter, Jane Kastner and her husband, Clarence of Bakersfield; son, Bill Dauphin and his wife, Sally of Scotts Valley; and son, George Dauphin and his wife, Sheila of Citrus Heights, Florida. She is also survived by three sisters, Velma Wilson, Francis Lynd, and Esther Stallings; and numerous nieces and nephews. We would like to thank Holly Love and the staff at Glenwood Gardens for the great care given over these last few years as well as the recent Hoffmann Hospice caregivers, Betty and Colleen. Donations preferred to Bakersfield Rescue Mission, P. O. Box 2222, Bakersfield, CA 93303. A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 18th, 9:00 a.m., at Greenlawn Memorial Park (River Blvd.) Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 8/17/2007. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Carter County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/carter/carter.htm
