Bonnie was born June 17, 1919, on a homestead near Ardmore, Okla., one of 11 children of Thomas Jefferson and Cordelia (Hopkins) Ballard. She died Dec. 12, 2006, in North Bend. Bonnie, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, grew up on the family homestead, where she did farm chores and especially liked being with the animals. She helped in the house, loved school and played with her many brothers and sisters. She was a bright student and graduated from high school in 1938. After high school, she attended Ardmore Business School and excelled in bookkeeping. Following business school, she worked in a drug store soda fountain owned by her cousin, Hetty Livsey. The following year, she went to stay with her brother, Howard, and his wife, Ginger, in Houston. One night at a USO dance, she met her future husband, a dashing sailor named Harry Hodges. They were married May 15, 1942, in Yuma, Ariz. They traveled extensively with Harry's military submarine career, including New London, Conn.; the Azores Islands; and many places in Europe, eventually living in North Bend. Bonnie worked in various capacities, including clerk, Tupperware, Amway and relief postal carrier. She was active in the First Baptist Church and Church Women United. She volunteered at THE House and South Coast Hospice. In recent years, she was a member of the Dolphinettes, the wives auxiliary of the Submarine Veterans Association. Bonnie enjoyed the activities of seamstress, flowers, gardening, cooking, Girl Scouts and creative writing. She encouraged her children to go to college and was proud of their achievements. Bonnie was known to be resourceful, kind and generous, and was a reliable friend to many and will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Harry Hodges; children, Kathlyn Hodges Moss and husband, Dennis, and Harry Jeffrey Hodges and wife, Barbara; sister, Myrta Juhree Berryhill; brother, Armand Uvon Ballard; three grandchildren, Adraine Juhree Moss, Jenica Noviello and Jesse Noviello; great-grandchild, Antonio Javier Moss; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
