EDWARD "NED"1 CHRISTIE was born in North Carolina. Notes for EDWARD "NED" CHRISTIE: According to Cherokee Evaluations of 1836, "lived on a fine farm on the northeast side of the Hiwapee River, above the mouth of the Valley River in North Carolina." "Killing of Ned Christie" states, He was considered a wealthy man with a two- story, hewed log house, two hundred fruit trees, and three slaves. His son Watt and other Christies cultivated land along the river. The enumerator of the Cherokee census noted: This river runs into the Hiwassie River, north course, has fine seats for machinery, abounds with iron ore and had about 10,000 acres of land of very super quality. The mountain scenery here is very grand. Gold is found in abundance. I was shown by the Indians some very old looking marks of mining operations on this river, near the head of the valley. I was shown a Chalybeate spring that was out of a solid mass of bog iron ore. The elder Ned Christie and Watt were the last to go westward on the "Trail of Tears" in December 1818. Records do not show whether Ned survived the trip. Children of EDWARD "NED" CHRISTIE are: 2. i. SMITH WATT2 CHRISTIE, b. Bet. 1812 - 1820, North Carolina. 3. ii. ARCH CHRISTIE, b. Abt. 1831. iii. JAMES CHRISTIE, b. Abt. 1841. Generation No. 2 2. SMITH WATT2 CHRISTIE (EDWARD "NED"1) was born Bet. 1812 - 1820 in North Carolina. He married LYDIA UNKNOWN. Notes for SMITH WATT CHRISTIE: Cherokee Evaluations of 1836 lists Watt Christie as 24 years old and living on a farm at the mouth of the Valley River in North Carolina, making his birthdate 1812. In later years, Watt would recall how he and his brothers dug for gold. In December 1838, he and his father were forced to march westward on the "Trail of Tears." Records do not show the elder Ned Christie as surviving, but Watt did and settled in Rabbit Trap, in the Going Snake District, 12 miles east of Tahlequah. "The Killing of Ned Christie" notes that Watt Christie enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 41, making his birthdate somewhere around 1820. It also states he enlisted in Capt. Budd Gritts' home guards and was assigned as blacksmith to Co. G. 2nd Regiment of Union volunteers. He was discharged May 31, 1865, at Ft. Gibson, OK. Drew's Regiment Muster Roll, Nov. 5, 1861, lists Watt in Co. E, along with brothers James and Arch. This Regiment was mostly full bloods and members of the Keetoowah Society. By July 6, 1862, for all intents and purposes this Regiment was disbanded, due to most of Drew's Cherokees deserting to the Union. The majority of these soldiers became part of the Union 1st, 2nd and 3rd Indian Home Guards under Col. William Weer. One of Watt's daughters apparently married a man named Sud Wilson, "Killing of Ned Christie" notes that Ned sent for a brother-in-law, Sud Wilson, a medicine man near Locust Grove, Sequoyah Dist.
