EDWARD "NED"1 CHRISTIE was born in North Carolina. Near the Hiwassee River, Tah-quo-hee District, Eastern Cherokee Nation. Notes for EDWARD "NED" CHRISTIE: According to Cherokee Evaluations of 1836, "lived on a fine farm on the northeast side of the Hiwapee River, above the mouth of the Valley River in North Carolina." "Killing of Ned Christie" states, He was considered a wealthy man with a two- story, hewed log house, two hundred fruit trees, and three slaves. His son Watt and other Christies cultivated land along the river. The enumerator of the Cherokee census noted: This river runs into the Hiwassie River, north course, has fine seats for machinery, abounds with iron ore and had about 10,000 acres of land of very super quality. The mountain scenery here is very grand. Gold is found in abundance. I was shown by the Indians some very old looking marks of mining operations on this river, near the head of the valley. I was shown a Chalybeate spring that was out of a solid mass of bog iron ore. The elder Ned Christie and Watt were the last to go westward on the "Trail of Tears" in December 1818 ((This researcher notes: The left on the Trail of Tears in September 1838). Records do not show whether Ned survived the trip. ((This researcher notes: yes they do.. he died abt. 1845)) Children of EDWARD "NED" CHRISTIE are: 2. i. SMITH WATT2 CHRISTIE, b. Bet. 1812 - 1820, North Carolina. Steve Christie Wilson Christie Allen Christie Jesse Christie Betsy Christie John Christie. 3. ii. ARCH CHRISTIE, b. Abt. 1831. iii. JAMES CHRISTIE, b. Abt. 1841. ((This researcher notes: Arch and James were not his children)) Generation No. 2 2. SMITH WATT2 CHRISTIE (EDWARD "NED"1) was born Bet. 1812 - 1820 in North Carolina. He married LYDIA UNKNOWN. Notes for SMITH WATT CHRISTIE: Cherokee Evaluations of 1836 lists Watt Christie as 24 years old and living on a farm at the mouth of the Valley River in North Carolina, making his birthdate 1812. ((This researcher notes: Yes, this son of Edward Christie)) In later years, Watt would recall how he and his brothers dug for gold. In December ((This researcher notes:Left in September, with wife Wa-da-ya. This Watt is the son of Lacy and Betsy)) 1838, he and his father were forced to march westward on the "Trail of Tears." Records do not show the elder Ned Christie as surviving, but Watt did and settled in Rabbit Trap ((This researcher notes: Wauhillau. They called it Ah-wah-hi-lah. But the sound switched in later years to Wauhillau. It is about 5 miles northwest of Rabbit Trap)), in the Going Snake District, 12 miles east of Tahlequah. "The Killing of Ned Christie" notes that Watt Christie enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 41, making his birthdate somewhere around 1820. It also states he enlisted in Capt. Budd Gritts' home guards and was assigned as blacksmith to Co. G. 2nd Regiment of Union volunteers. He was discharged May 31, 1865, at Ft. Gibson, OK(Not Okla. yet, Cherokee Nation).((This researcher notes: Correct, except date of birth was August 1817, date of death was 15 Feb. 1902)) Drew's Regiment Muster Roll, Nov. 5, 1861, lists Watt in Co. E, along with brothers James ((This researcher notes:son)) and Arch. This Regiment was mostly full bloods and members of the Keetoowah Society. By July 6, 1862, for all intents and purposes this Regiment was disbanded, due to most of Drew's Cherokees deserting ((This researcher notes:they were not called deserters, they reenlisted in the Union forces)) to the Union. The majority of these soldiers became part of the Union 1st, 2nd and 3rd Indian Home Guards under Col. William Weer. One of Watt's daughters apparently married a man named Sud Wilson ((This researcher notes:Seed Wilson, daughter was Rachel)) , "Killing of Ned Christie" notes that Ned sent for a brother-in-law, Sud Wilson, a medicine man near Locust Grove, ((This researcher notes:Saline District)) Sequoyah Dist. Children of SMITH CHRISTIE ((This researcher notes:Watt Smith Christie was married to Nancy ?)) and LYDIA UNKNOWN ((This researcher notes:Watt Christie, father of Ned Christie, was married to Lydia Thrower)) are:4. i. EDWARD (This researcher notes:Edward was not his name, it was Ne-de Wa-de or Ned Christie only) "NED"3 CHRISTIE, b. UNKNOWN CHRISTIE, m. JAMES PADGETT. ((This researcher notes:No, the only James Padgett I am aware of married a Sixkiller, during that era)) Notes for UNKNOWN CHRISTIE: According to "Killing of Ned Christie," one of Ned Christie's sisters married James Padgett ((This researcher notes:did not)) ix. BILL CHRISTIE. ((This researcher notes:Ned had a half brother named William Christie, often called Bill)) Notes for BILL CHRISTIE: ((This researcher notes:It should be BALL Christie)) Although not listed in most accounts as a son of Watt Christie, an article covering the death of James Christie, Watt's grandson, notes that James "is also a nephew of Bill ((This researcher notes:Ball not Bill)) Christie, who is in jail at this place, sentenced to hang on the 18th of August. ((This researcher notes:The Watonga Republican)) ((This researcher notes:Yes, Ball was in prison for murder; he was released to go home to Goback's place and die)) 3. ((This researcher notes:NO, Christie does not translate in Cherokee to anything. It is not a Cherokee word. The original name was Wa-ki-gu ((This researcher notes:also can mean Sugar Tree or Step-Along)). ((This researcher notes:If a Christie descendant writes their name in Cherokee today, it is written as Wa-ki-gu.)) Attended to 3rd grade at 1-room school in July Springs, 1/2 mile E. of his ((This researcher notes:The School was called Christie, named for Arch Christie whom began it... Arch, Ned's uncle.)) father's home. Skilled blacksmith. "Killing Ned Christie" notes: At 10, Ned was reputed to be one of the best marksmen in the Cherokee Nation. When grown, Ned settled on the West bank of Bitting Creek, now known as Bidding Creek. He had a small field of corn, few head of cattle, hogs, and a blacksmith shop next to a one-room log cabin. Member of the Keetoowah Society whose purpose was to protect the full-blood Cherokees against aggression, and especially to guard their political and civil rights ((This researcher notes:NO, a religious organization, to continue and protect the traditons and culture of the Ani-waya)). The name Keetoowah meant the "Real People," or "Principle People." ((This researcher notes:NO, does not)) ((This researcher notes:Indian Dawes Roll Census Card shows Ned's sister Mary Christie, married to Samuel Manus, as being 1/2 blood.)) Dec. 24, 1884, accused of killing William Palone in a liquor-related incident. Notes for NANCY GREASE: Marriage to Ned Christie may have been a common-law arrangement ((This researcher notes: There was not common law until Oklahoma became a state. Ned and Nancy were married in the traditional Cherokee way)), though census records of the GoingSnake Dist. in 1890 refer to her as Nancy Christie. She was about 18 when she married Ned. ((This researcher notes: She was married before marrying Ned, and had a child, Albert Adair)) Records vary as to Nancy's age. Her tombstone lists 1871; 1880 Cherokee Census says she was 10; 1890 Census says she was 22.((This researcher notes:She was born in March 1871 and died 8 Jan. 1921)) Child of EDWARD (NED) CHRISTIE and NANNIE GRITTS is: ((This researcher notes: NO, Nannie Dick)) i. (Ned's first cousin) In Nov. 1893, Arch was arrested in a Chicago hotel lobby and returned to Ft, Smith, Ark. for trial, then sentenced to Kings Co.
