She was born Dec. 6, 1976, in Tahlequah, to Rev. Randall and Betty Lou (John) Cummings. Cheryl was a member of the New Mission Church in Rocky Ford, where her father serves as pastor. She was a 1995 graduate of Oaks High School, where she played basketball, softball and ran cross country. In fall 1994, she was the football homecoming queen. She also helped lead her basketball team in winning the Silver Ball as state runner-up in March 1995. Cheryl received an associate's degree in liberal arts from Haskell Indian Nation University, Lawrence, Kan. She later received her nursing certificate from Northeast Vo-Tech in Kansas. She was employed by Cherokee Nation as a nurse at the Jay Clinic. She was recently certified as a massage therapist through Vo-Tech. Cheryl has won various sports awards, was recognized in Who's Who in High School and played in the movie “Stolen Women.” She was very dynamic and enjoyed many hobbies, including sewing, cooking, running, photography, planning weddings, decorating cakes and hitting golf balls with her brother Dink. Cheryl is survived by her husband, Steve Jones of Rocky Ford; her son, Nakoma Isaiah Romannose of Rocky Ford; her parents, Randall and Betty (John) Cummings of Rocky Ford; a sister, Larissa Marie Ortiz and husband Hector of Oaks; two brothers, Benjamin “Dink” Cummings and wife Traci of Rocky Ford and Samuel Louis Cummings of Rocky Ford; paternal grandmother, Lucille Gourd; paternal grandfather, Eagle Kingfisher; four nieces, Alacyn Cummings, Alyssa Cummings, Ashley Cummings and Kyleigh Marie Ortiz; a nephew, Tyras “T.J.” Cummings; and numerous extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ida (Meyers) John and Wilbert John Sr., formerly of Farmington, N.M. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at Oaks High School Gymnasium with Brother Jay Swallow officiating. Cheryl will be laid to rest at Bill Batt Cemetery. Pallbearers include Thompson Hornet, Shane Turner, Aaron Mason, Rick Jones, Anthony Pritchett and Skeet Bemo. Alternate pallbearers include Steve Jones and Hector Ortiz. Honorary pallbearers include her brothers and cousins from Tahlequah and her uncles from Farmington, N.M.
