Herb Patterson and Rev. John Lee officiating. Interment followed in the Tahlequah City Cemetery under the direction of the Green Country Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Julian Hornet, Haskel Brown, Mickey Spears, Ike Rose, John Anderson and Deward Craig. Honorary pallbearers were L.A. Craig, Mel Davidson, Noel Guinn, Steve Cox and Raymond Waltrip. Viola Shirley Smith was born Oct. 15, 1902 near Eldon, in Indian Territory and died Saturday, August 24, 2002 in Tahlequah. She was the daughter of the late Amanda Sanders Shirley and John L. Shirley, Viola was the youngest child and both parents were previously married. At the age of four her mother passed away and she was then cared for by her two aunts and her older sister. At an early age she left Eldon and moved to Tahlequah to work for J.A. Lawerence's family as a housekeeper. She began attending the First Baptist Church of Tahlequah and was baptized on August 25, 1923. The Lawerence family also employed a young man named Everette Smith, you guessed it they fell in love and were married on October 6, 1925 at the First Baptist Church. In May, 1925 Viola gave birth to their only child, Glennis Mae Smith. Her husband Everette passed away in 1929. Viola continued to work as a housekeeper for several prominent families in Tahlequah, she worked with the first hot lunch program in Cherokee County and during World War II she worked in Tulsa at Spartan Aircraft. Viola worked with the Community Action Program and was named Foster Grandparent of the Year. Viola loved working in her yard and gardens. She also found pleasure in sewing and canning. Viola was preceded in death by many of her family members including her parents and lastly by her great-grandson Scott Sims in 1998. Viola leaves behind her daughter, Glennis Anderson of Tahlequah; four grandchildren; Barbara Venard and husband Joe of Choctaw, Everette Sims and wife Sheryl of Westville, Brenda Carpenter and her husband Bruce Broyles of Flower Mound, Texas and Kenneth Sim and wife Traci of Stillwell. 10 great- grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends and other relatives
