Neel, 89, of Tahlequah will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday (27 August 1986) at Peggs Community Church with the Revs. Renus Warren and Eark Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in New Home Cemetery under direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home. Pallbeares will be Wendell Welch, John Hendrickson, Oliver Lusk, Alvin Cole, Ross Lay and Edmond Williams. Neel was born Jan 18, 1897, in Mountain Home, Ark. He died Sunday (24 August 1986) at Tahlequah City Hospital. He was the son of Alex and Minerval Haney Neel. A retired farmer and stockman, he had been a resident of Cherokee County suince 1907. Neel lived on Flint Creek at the time of statehood; and lived in and around Peggs more than 50 years. Neel was one of the survivors of the tornado of 1920 in Peggs, and was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Peggs". During World War l, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Peggs Community Church. His wife, Velma, died in 1941 and a son, Harold Dean, Died in 1963. Survivors are a daughter, Pauline Johnson, of Tahlequah; a sister, Faye Rudy, of Burbank, Calif.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
