ALICE ISBELL BURIED AT SOPER Wife of Early Settler In Oklahoma And "Rough Rider" For Teddy Roosevelt Funeral services were held Friday (28 February 1936) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Church of Christ at Soper for Mrs. Alice Farris Isbell, who died Wednesday (26 February 1936) afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. F. Baker, following a long illness. Services were conducted by Elder A. Leroy Elkins, of Hugo. Mrs. Isbell was born at Whitesboro, Texas on March 7th, 1863. She married Baily Zachary Isbell and to the union eleven children were born, eight of them living, as follows: Mrs. W. F. Baker, Soper; Mrs. Henry Burris, Smithville, Okla.; Mrs. Effie Overstreet, Ft. Worth, Texas; Bailey Isbell, Paducah, Texas; Mrs. Joe D. Van Horn, Boynton, Okla.; Mrs. Jim Grayson, Ada, Okla.; Mrs. Jean LaVallie, El Paso, Texas, and Zack Isbell, Olney, Texas. She is also survived by three brothers, Si Farris, Lane, Okla.; George Farris, Beeville, Texas, and John Farris, Frederick, Okla. She is survived by 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mrs. Isbell had been a member of the Church of Christ for 25 years and was a devout Christian. Her husband who was a member of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders and who made two runs in the opening of the Cherokee strip and the Pontotoc-Kickapoo settlement, staking successful claims in each run, died at Hartshorne, Okla., in 1905. Mrs. Isbell made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Baker, in Soper, for the past three years and was the grandmother of Bob Baker of Antlers. Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased.
