All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Riverview Cemetery--Brawley CA Velma Mae Kilborn Sept. 16, 1914 - Jan. 20, 2007 Velma Mae Kilborn, 92, of Brawley passed away Saturday morning, January 20 in her sleep. Velma was born Velma Mae Merrell in 1914 to Lula and John Ed Merrell in Grant, Okla. After her high school graduation in 1932, she married Ulric Dayton (Jim) Kilborn a machinst and welder. Velma gave birth to her three oldest sons, Dayton, James and Merle before moving from Oklahoma to Texas where she delivered daughter, Glenda and son, Alan. The Kilborns moved to California in 1947 where Velma remained a resident of Brawley for 60 years. Velma worked her way up through the ranks during her 34 years at Pioneers Memorial Hospital. She began as a housekeeper in 1950 and with the prompting from the Dominican Nun hospital administrators she earned her LVN license in 1970. Velma worked in surgery for 20 of her 34 years assisting doctors with operations and other medical procedures. Velma retired in 1984 to serve her community and friends and tend her garden. She administered medical services such as giving shots and special care to her friends in the community during her retirement. Velma was well known for her tireless work ethic, high moral standards, community spirit, personal sacrifice and loving dedication to her family and friends. She attended First Baptist and Western Avenue Baptist church until she was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease in 2002. Velma was truly an angel on earth. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends, and community. Visitation will be held Friday, January 26 from 6-8 p.m. at Frye Chapel in Brawley. Chapel service will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27 at Frye Chapel in Brawley with her grandson David A. Kilborn officiating. Burial is to immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Ed. Merrell; husband, Jim Kilborn; and sons, Merle Kilborn and Dayton Kilborn. Velma leaves behind her loving sister Lola Roberts of Brawley; sons James Kilborn of Brawley and Alan Kilborn of Auburn, CA.; daughter, Glenda Hargrove of Oxnard, CA.; granddaughters, Evelyn Craycraft of Woodinville, WA., Cheryl Heiny of Brawley, Alana Kilborn of Rocklin, CA., and Tammy Ussat of Yuma, AZ.; grandsons, Kenneth Kilborn of Pleasanton, CA., John U. Kilborn of Oceanside, CA., David Kilborn of Fresno, CA., John F. Kilborn of Grass Valley, CA., James Michael and Mark E. Kilborn of West Covina, CA.; and 18 great-grandchidren. The family suggest donations be made to: Alzheimer's Association 584 W. Main St. in El Centro.
