Schaffner, 85, died Thursday, April 30, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday (MST) in El Campo Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon Cummings and Bob Wood officiating. Burial will be in Campo Cemetery by Cimarron Mortuary of Boise City, Okla. Mr. Schaffner was born in Moorewood, Okla., and moved to Baca County in 1916. He farmed there until 1937. He moved to Paonia, Colo., then returned to Campo in 1937 where he was employed at a gas station and cafe until it was sold in 1960. He retired from farming and ranching in 1983. For the next 12 years, he was employed by the U.S. Forest Service. Mr. Schaffner was a member of the Campo Baptist Church where he served as deacon and trustee. He served on the Campo School Board and was Campo fire chief. He married Katherine Ogle in 1937 at the Ogle farm. She died in July. He also was preceded in death by a great-grandson. Survivors include two daughters, Zoretta Ownby of Campo and Donna Kester of Reno, Nev.; a son, Leroy Schaffner of Dalhart, Texas; two sisters, Bertha Gilman of Salem, Ore., and Ester Stebritz of Hotchkill, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great grandchild. The family request memorials be to the Alzheimer's Unit of S.E. Colorado Hospital in Springfield, Colo., which may be left in care of the mortuary.
