Akers (Dr.Bill), 86, died May 19, 2003. He was born on September 13, 1916, at the home of his parents, Dr. C.T. Akers and Nelle Smith Akers in Cordell, OK. He grew up in Cordell and graduated from Cordell High School. He married Nettie Rachel Holt of Cloud Chief, OK, in 1940. After he graduated from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL in 1942, they moved to Norman, OK where he opened his first practice. Professionally he was a member of the Oklahoma Optometric Association. Late in 1943 they moved to Cordell where he shared a practice with his father for many years. He practiced for 42 years before retiring in 1984. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cordell. He was very active in the community giving of himself before and after retirement. He especially enjoyed being part of the Meals-On-Wheels program. He was an avid golfer who loved the game and greatly enjoyed the friends he made. In his later years he became a craftsman and built golf clubs for others. He had a great sense of humor and will be remembered as a generous and loving man who touched many lives. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nettie Holt Akers, their three children, Gibson and wife Sharon, Stuart and wife Carolyn, Sally and husband Jim; seven grandchildren including Jeffery, Michael, Kathleen, Jonathan, Susan, Tiffany, and Stacey; three great-grandchildren including Jordan, Michael, and Haley; sisters-in-law Mrs Irving Duffield (Edna), Mrs. Charlie Holt (Elizabeth), Mrs. Earl Holt (Faye) and Mrs. Henry Holt (Auma Jean). He loved his many nieces and nephews as well as his extended family of close friends. He will be deeply missed by all of us. Those who wish to give donations might consider the American Heart Association.
