All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::IOOF Cemetery--Norman OK Havenbrook Funeral Home Obituary Dr. Melvin Lloyd Allen Dr. Melvin Lloyd Allen, 55, of Norman died Saturday, August 6, 2005, in OKC, Ok. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Thurs, Aug 11, 2005, at the Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel in Norman. Mel's cousin, Reverend Mark Allen, will officiate. Interment will follow at Norman's lOOF Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman. Dr. Allen was born November 12, 1949, in Norman, to William Lloyd Allen and Mary Ellen Allen Barr. He was a lifelong Norman resident, except for 10 years in the Philadelphia area. He attended Norman High School and graduated from Moore High School in 1968. He was a Veteran of the US Army, serving as a combat medic in Korea during the Vietnam era. Mel received his PhD at the University of Ok in 1980 and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Dr. Allen was the first individual to receive a PhD in Primatology, which was a triple major of anthropology, zoology, and psychology. He wrote the lead article in the 1st edition of the American Journal of Primatology. He was the Clinical/Research Director at the Inst for Primate Studies at OU until it's closure. He then turned to the medical field and excelled again in that profession. While in the medical field, he was the Director of the Oklahoma Foundation for Digestive Research at the University of Oklahoma, OKC, Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, at the Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, in Philadelphia, P A., Associate Professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, P A, Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of KS, Kansas City, KS. For a short time after moving back to Norman he was the Director in the Division of Animal Resources at the University of OK Health Sciences Center. His professional memberships included the American Gastroenterological Association Foundation, a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, The New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was listed in several Who's Who in Science. Dr. Allen had written 103 abstracts, had 87 presentations of his research, and 45 publications during his career. Mel loved his bass boat and fishing for large-mouth bass, was an avid OD football and NY Yankee fan, proud of his Choctaw ancestry, and will be missed by not only his friends and family, but by his pets, Boomer and Murma. Dr. Allen was preceded in death by his grandparents, Horace Allen and Lillian Brooks, Charles Marshall and Mary Coker, infant sister, Sharon Allen, and his mother-in-law Helen Lloyd. He is survived by his wife Gayle (Gray) Allen of the home; father, Lloyd Allen and wife Fran of Edmond, mother, Mary Ellen Barr of OKC, brother David Allen, Norman, sisters Kim Atkinson, Edmond, and Kathy Robbins and husband Dave, of Norman, father-in-law, John Lloyd and wife Melba of Norman, sisters-in-law Carol Homes and husband Bruce of OKC, Anne Bennett and husband Bill of Florida, brothers-in-law, John Lloyd Jr, and wife Sheila of Norman, and Arthur Lloyd and wife Juli of Florida, 19 nieces and nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
