Anita Dolores Brown, known as Dolores to the thousands of students and friends who knew her well, and as "Lolita" to her friends in Guadalajara, and elsewhere in Mexico, left us to join the Lord this Sunday at noon. She was at peace with her life, at peace with her accomplishments and with her relationships. A sister, Jean of Colorado; a niece, Katherine Brown of California; a niece, Julia Irish of Colorado and a nephew, David Irish also of Colorado, survive her. Dolores is the daughter of Pauline and Otto Brown. Dolores received her undergraduate degree (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from Miami University of Ohio. Masters from the University of Colorado, and PhD from the University of Wisconsin. Dolores taught Spanish at the University of Colorado from 1948 - 1952, then in Wisconsin from 1952 - 1956. From 1956 - 1961, she was an Assistant Professor at Smith College in Massachusetts, where she was Director of the Junior Year in Spain Project. In 1977, she received an award from the King of Spain, the Dama de la Orden del Merito Civil for her efforts. She was a professor of Spanish at the University of Arizona, until retirement. She was acting Head of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and at the time of her death, she was an Emeritus Professor. She was a leading member of the Arizona Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. That organization honored her by establishing an annual "AATSP Dolores Brown," given to the outstanding teacher who has contributed to the profession in an exemplary manner. Those words perfectly describe Dolores Brown. She was an exemplary teacher, friend, confidant and counselor to many generations of students and young people in Arizona and across the Country. She was nationally recognized for her efforts. Dolores deeply believed in God, and was an active member of Rincon Congregational Church in Tucson, where she trained and counseled young people through their confirmation process with wisdom, faith and pure grace, from 1961 through her death. She held many positions of responsibility at Rincon, and the University of Arizona, and throughout her life. A memorial service will be held at Rincon Congregational Church at 122 N. Craycroft Road, Tucson, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10th. The family suggests donations to the Church or Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation of Southern Arizona, 4560 East Broadway Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85711.
