Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, July 15, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bob Rice officiating. Her mother's sister, Hazel Taylor, acted as the mother and grandmother to Effie's children when Viola died in 1954. Effie excelled in everything she did including earning a Masters Degree in English and French at the University of Western Ontario. In 1946, she married Howard Clemens, the brother of a close high school friend. After their marriage, they moved to Putin Bay, Ohio, where Howard completed his PhD in Zoology at Ohio State University. Their first child, David was born there. The family moved to Norman, Ok when Howard became a professor of Zoology at the University of Oklahoma. Effie dedicated her life to her children, David, Sandy, Sheila and Bonnie, her husband, home and community. She aided her husband in his many ventures and acted as the business manager for all their projects including training Peace Corp volunteers, H & E Properties, Inc., Sooner Fish Farms, Presidency of Cat Fish Farmers of America, The Begonia Society Board, Crystal Bridge of Oklahoma City, Water Garden Tour and many other endeavors. She was the beloved life-long friend of many in the Norman community through her support, involvement and efforts in many activities. These activities include the University of Oklahoma Zoology Wives Club, Redbud Garden Club, local bridge club, Remnants Quilt Group, First Presbyterian Church of Norman, OK, and the Chrysanthemum and Begonia Societies in which she held many offices. Effie loved to travel and often traveled with her husband on international business and pleasure trips as well as to most of the states in the United States. She became an accomplished camper as she, her children and husband traveled around the country. Every year, from 1947 to 1967, she and Howard drove their children from Norman, OK,1200 miles each way to London, Ontario, to see their many relatives. Many of these trips occurred before four-lane highways were available making the annual trek even more remarkable and memorable. Effie was noted for her skills with her hands including knitting, quilting, sewing, cooking, horticulture, and playing piano. She took piano lessons and performed regularly in recitals until the age of 78 years old. Effie was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Lorien, Raymond, Carly, Beth, Ross, Kelsey, Megan and Eric, as well as great- grandmother to Luke. She was the loving mother-inlaw for Glenda, Barbara, and Bob. She enjoyed witnessing the marriages of Lorien to Jeff, Raymond to Jennifer, and Beth to Josh. They all love and will cherish, in fond memories, the individual quilts she made for each of them. Her sacrifices throughout her life to help promote her husband's career and dreams, and efforts to engender a sense of wonder, awe and learning in her children, and love of family will have a lasting impact on our family and community. She will be missed and forever loved by her friends and family. The family is establishing the Effie Clemens Scholarship Fund in the OU School of Music. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to this fund at 100 Timberdale Road, Norman, OK 73019.
