All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Atwood Cemetery--Atwood OK Havenbrook Funeral Home Obituary Stephen Warren Cain Stephen Warren Cain, 56, of Norman, died Saturday, September 3, at his home after a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, September 7, at 10 am at Goodrich Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Atwood Cemetery, Atwood, Oklahoma, at 2:00 P.M. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma. Steve was born January 19, 1949, in Holdenville, Oklahoma, to V.C. "Bud" and Ada Wilkerson Cain. He grew up on the family farm in Atwood where they grew peanuts and kept cattle. He attended Atwood Schools, graduating in 1967 as valedictorian of his class. He attended East Central State College in Ada from 1967 until he began active duty service with the Oklahoma Army National Guard in 1970. He moved to Norman in July of 1970 when he joined the Norman Police Department. He met his wife Debbie Cline in August 1970 and they were married on July 28, 1971. He completed his B.B.A. degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1976. His first daughter, Kristi was born in 1977, followed two years later by his second daughter, Keri Beth. He was devoted to his family and his greatest pride was his daughter's and their accomplishments. Steve enjoyed a 29-year career at the Norman Police Department, working his way through the ranks to retire at Captain in 1999. He worked every division during his career. During the early years of his career, he worked as a community relations officer doing outreach to local schools, the J.D. McCarty center, and other community organizations. As a Lieutenant he oversaw the Special Operations Unit, a time of his career he remembered with great fondness. He ended his career as the commander of the Criminal Investigations Unit. While an officer, he became involved in the Fraternal Order of Police on the local, state and national level. He attended and assisted at the first National Police Officer's Memorial Service in Washington, DC, and continued to support the fundraising efforts for a national memorial for many years. He is widely respected for his role as a tireless advocate for law enforcement officers and their families. Prior to his retirement he was elected to the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement Board, most recently serving as the appointee of the Speaker of the House. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He enjoyed gardening and using his home-grown produce in his many kitchen adventures. He will be fondly remembered for his annual tradition of baking hundreds of loaves of bread for friends and loved ones at the holidays. In his retirement he enjoyed attending the McFarlin Men's Prayer Breakfast, and was an active member of Goodrich Memorial United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Bud Cain, father-in-law Robert Cline, nephew, Mark Cline, and special friend and neighbor Tom Siegenthaler. He is survived by his wife Debbie of the home; daughters Kristi, of Norman and Keri Beth of Annapolis, Maryland; mother Ada; mother-in-law Vivian Cline; brother-in-law Wayne Cline and wife Laura; nephew David Cline, his wife Sally and their four daughters; and niece Julie Cline all of Norman; special neighbor and friend Grace Siegenthaler of Norman; his black Labrador Lola; and many extended family members and friends. Bearers will be Lonnie Kiener, Stephen A. Lucas, Jack Marquis, Bill Pendergraft, Robert Sinor, and Neil Vickers. Honorary bearers will be "Cain's Boys." Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, designated to Lung Cancer research.
