All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::NOT LISTED Kersey Sr., Coy Yates Coy Yates Kersey, Sr., 82, passed away peacefully at home on May 29, 2003. He was born August 27, 1920, in Stuart, Oklahoma, to Lon and Nora Kersey, the youngest of six children. The family moved to Norman when he was 3 years old. He was known as 'Lefty” at Norman High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He joined the Coast Guard in 1941 and was stationed on the icebreaker Mackinaw in Lake Michigan. During his tour of duty he met and married Norma Jean Parish on February 11, 1944, in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan. After the war, they settled in Norman where he began work as a carpenter. He spent many years playing basketball, baseball, and softball on local and semi-pro teams and coached Little League and American Legion baseball. As construction superintendent for Barbour and Short, he built many landmark buildings on the OU campus and throughout central Oklahoma. In 1983 he retired and moved to Eufaula where he spent many hours fishing, drinking coffee with friends, and raising bushels of vegetables in his garden. He returned to Norman in 1999 to be closer to family. Coy is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Norman, his sons and their wives, Coy, Jr. and Frances, Rick and Sara, his sister, Velma, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, countless friends, fishing buddies, and fellow Sooners. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lon and Nora Kersey, his brothers, Orb, Vergil, and Cleo, and his sister, Verla. Services will be 10:00, Monday, June 2, at Mayes Funeral Home, 500 Alameda in Norman. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Oklahoma Foundation or the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
