All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== The Chickasha Express-Star 25 March 2004 BARCLAY "MAC" McELROY Services for Mr. Barclay "Mac" McElroy, 97, of Corsicana, TX, will be held Thursday, March 25, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at the IOOF Cemetery in Norman, Oklahoma. Robert Bruce McElroy and Austin Stewart will officiate. Barclay "Mac" McElroy was born Dec. 4, 1906, in Ballinger, Texas, to Emmett H. and Minnie Dyess McElroy and died March 23, 2004, in Corsicana, Texas. He was 97. Barclay moved with his parents to Norman, Oklahoma, from Temple, Texas, in 1925. He graduated from Norman High School in 1927, in 1937 from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. in History, and in 1949 with a master's in education. Barclay and Ruby Jacobs were married in 1928, and had three sons, twins Jack Wayne and Dewayne, and Bob. Dewayne died at birth and Ruby preceded Barclay in death on Aug. 30, 1932. In 1937 Barclay and Helen Barnes were married. They were married for 62 years and had one son, Franklin Michael. Helen preceded Barclay in death on Feb. 10, 1999. He was a teacher, coach, high school principal, and superintendent at the Alex, Oklahoma, schools for a period of 31 years. He was inducted into the Grady County Educators Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The athletic field house in Alex bears his name. Mac was devoted to education, his school and community, his church and to kids. He was a wonderful teacher of history and English, and more importantly, of life. After his retirement he regularly received calls and visits from former students seeking his council or just wanting to chat. Not only could he recall the names of most all of his former students but also their moms and dads and brothers and sisters. He was a great champion of the disadvantaged and motivated them to greater self-esteem and excellence. He was a fine coach with the philosophy that players were always winners if they played hard, did their best, and had fun. He loved his players and once said that he never had an allstate player, but he sure had a bunch of all-American boys. He loved his church and was an elder at West Side Church of Christ in Norman, and at the Alex Church of Christ for many years. He was an activer leader, taught classes, led singing and did it lovingly and enthusiastically. He was a joy to be around with his storytelling, poetry, quoting, singing, and laughter. He brought a lot of light and life to this world and will be sorely missed. He is also preceded in death by his son, Jack McElroy; his parents, Emmett and Minnie Lou McElroy; and 10 brothers and sisters.
