Mitchell, 78, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Mitchell was born in Childress and graduated from Childress High School. He married Maidelle Perkins in 1941 at Childress. He was a public school teacher for more than 30 years, having taught in Denver City from 1946 to 1983. He also farmed in Childress, Cottle and Hardeman counties from the 1950s to the 1980s. He was a partner in Harrison Well Service, Mustang Butane and Whitie's Service Station in Denver City. He was a member of the Methodist church in Denver City, where he was on the board of trustees and was a past chairman. He also taught Sunday school and was a member of the Methodist Men. During World War II, he was a navigation instructor for the Army Air Corps in Hondo. He also served in the Pacific and Guam. He was an instructor for the Navy in Chicago and Oklahoma City. Survivors include his wife; a son, Truitt Mitchell of Sundown; two sisters, Lois Odom of Crosbyton and Dr. Brownie Kimbrough of Siloam Springs, Ark.; and three grandchildren.
