All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::Not Listed Powell, Ruth Ruth Powell, 89, of Norman, Oklahoma died April 19, 2003 at the Noble Health Care Center in Noble. A Private Memorial Service for family will be held at the home with Reverend David Spain of the First Christian Church of Norman officiating. Mrs. Powell was born July 14, 1913, in Ladonia, Texas, the third of four children born to C. C. (Charles Columbus) and Emma Miller Roberts. Her early childhood was spent in Paris, Texas, and her school years in Corsicana, Texas. She received two masters degrees, first in English from Baylor University and later in Piano from Texas Women's University in Denton. She married William Lytle Powell in Marietta, OK on April 20, 1933, and spent four years in London, England, while her husband was obtaining his performance and teaching degrees in Piano at the renowned Tobias Matthay Pianoforte School. Their oldest child, Bill was born while they were in London. Mrs. Powell moved to Norman in 1940 with her family when Mr. Powell began teaching at the University of Oklahoma as a Professor of Piano. Mrs. Powell taught piano in her home for over forty years. In addition to family and music, she loved gardening in her beautiful yard. After her husband's death in 1998, Mrs. Powell remained in her home with her friend and caregiver, Azalia Burrough, moving in late 2002 to Noble Health Care Center. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Norman for the past sixty years. Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband, older brother, Harral, and older sister, Minnie Maurice Ruble. She is survived by one son, Bill Powell and wife, Johnny, of Harlingen, Texas; two daughters, Jean Powell of Norman, Oklahoma and Joan Jones and husband, Fred, of The Woodlands, Texas; younger sister, Nell Davis of San Diego, California; seven grandchildren, Chris, Harriet, Bill, Michael, Dave, Jennifer and Susan; eleven great-grandchildren, Melissa, Eric, Elizabeth, Billy, Jesse, Veronica, Heather, Katie, Lauren, Kevin and Ryan and one great- greatgrandchild, Logan. Memorial Contributions can be made to the University of Oklahoma Foundation in honor of the Ruth and Lytle Powell scholarship fund, or the First Christian Church of Norman. As a final request by Mrs. Powell, a donation in the amount of $10,000 will be made to each.
