Dr. Price was born Oct. 12, 1927, in Natchez, Miss., to Lucile Walker Price and Gloucester Allen Price Sr., D.D.S. He grew up in Jackson, Miss. Dr. Price graduated from Oberlin College, 1946, in Ohio and from Meharry Medical College, 1951, in Nashville, Tenn., where he met and married Hannah Littlejohn. He served as a physician and Captain in the United States Air Force, 1952-1954. Following internship and residency, Dr. Price practiced internal medicine in Waukegan, Ill., for 35 years, 1963-1998, in private practice and also as active staff at both St. Therese Medical Center and Victory Memorial Hospital. His professional activities included being the chair for Chicago HMO Quality Assurance in 1990; president of the Medical Staff, 1993, and Medical Executive Committee chair, 1994 at St. Therese Medical Center; Lake County Board of Health member, 1999-2003; and preceptor in Clinical Medicine at the Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, now the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Dr. Price is survived by wife Bernadette "Bunny" Coughlin Price. The couple moved to Norman in February 2004. After receiving his Oklahoma medical license, Dr. Price volunteered at Health for Friends in Norman for 18 months, then worked as a staff physician at the Norman Veterans Center from October 2005 to August 2006. Dr. Price especially enjoyed golfing and also served as a mentor with the First Tee Youth Development Sports Initiative Program in North Chicago. A lifelong learner and voracious reader, Dr. Price took computer and Spanish classes at Lake County Community College in Waukegan, and also took Spanish in Norman. He taught English as a second language in Waukegan and Norman. However, Dr. Price's most fulfilling and enjoyable activities included spending time with family, extended family and friends. Dr. Price enjoyed supporting, attending, and participating in his children's, grandchildren's and extended family members' academic, musical, artistic, extracurricular and athletic activities. One of Dr. Price's greatest gifts to his family was his willingness to share his vast experiences, wisdom and family history. Perhaps his greatest legacy is the values he instilled in his children with regard to work ethic, honesty, and integrity, as well as the importance of education, caring for others, and "making a contribution."
