All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::B G Boydston FH--Lindsay OK ZELDA MAE COMBS ROBBERSON passed away peacefully on Friday, September 16, 2005 at Grace Living Center in Norman, Oklahoma. Zelda was born April 18, 1915, in Roger Mills County near the town of Rankin, Oklahoma, to Sarah Berth Wright Combs and Starley Howard Combs. She grew up on a farm w:th her older sister Ezell and a younger brotl:er Raymond whom they called "Sonny". Zelda attended R~ydon Public Scl1oo!s wh~re she graduated in 1933 as Salutorian of her senior class. Zelda attended Central State Teachers' CoHege in Edmond, Oklahoma., and graduated with degrees in Elementary and Physical Education in 1937. She began her teaching career in Blackwell where she taught from 1937 until 19??. During her time at Cemral State she met her future husband, Guy, and on June 1, 1941, they were married at the Trinity Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Together they moved to Keystone where they taught from 1941 until 1943. They then moved to Bixby where they taught from 1943 to 1945. In 1945 Guy entered the Navy and Zelda moved to Elk City to live with her mother while Guy was away. She taught one-half year in Elk City and one-half year in Sayre between 1945 and 1946. Upon Guy's return both moved to Hydro where Guy took an administrative position and Zelda began their family. John Howard Robberson was born July 3, 1947. In 1949 Zelda and Guy moved to Lindsay where they were to remain for the rest of their lives. James Kent Robberson was born October 28, 1950. Zelda went back to teaching in Lindsay in 1953. She taught fourth grade from 1953 until 1977 when she retired from teaching with thirty- three years of experience. During her tenure as the "Superintendent's Wife" she won the respect and admiration of her fellow teachers. They praised the gentle, soft spoken person who "never had a bad word to say of anyone". She was recognized by her peers as Teacher of the Year and was likewise recognized as Garvin County Teacher of the Yea.r that same year. Zelda was a member of the First United Methodist Church where years of service included working for years on the Bereavement Commirtee providing comfort for those who lost friends and family. Active in the community. she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Progressive Study Club, China Painters, and any number of groups who ,",vhere playing Bridge. In 1999 after Guy suffered a debilitating stroke. both moved to Norman where they lived until their deaths. Many thanks to the care givers who provided for their needs during their decline Zelda was preceded in death by her mother Bertha, father Starley Howard, sister Ezell, and brother "Sonny". She is survived by her son John and his wife Lynn, her son Jim and his wife Juhree, grandchildren John Thomas and his wife Amber, James and his wife KeHy. Guy Michael and his wife Mindy, Grant and his fiance Gwen, Paige; step grandchildren Chase and Lauren Sully.
