Online condolences may be posted at www.havenbrookfuneralhome.com/Obituaries.html. ========= Norman Transcript October 10, 2003 Billy Robert Rhynes Rhynes Billy Robert Rhynes, 65, of Lexington died Tuesday, Oct. 7, at his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman with the Rev. Dale Kirkhoff officiating. Burial will follow at the Norman IOOF Cemetery. Havenbrook Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Rhynes was born Feb. 7, 1938, in Corbett, to Hartzell and Mary Tiller Rhynes. His family moved from Corbett to Norman in 1947. He graduated from Norman High School and was a starter for the 1955 state championship basketball team. He married Betty Green June 11, 1957, at Trinity Baptist Church in Norman. Mr. Rhynes graduated from the University of Oklahoma. He was an Outstanding ROTC officer and was named to the Dean's List. He was an Army veteran. He was Oklahoma Jaycee president in 1970-71 and U.S. Jaycee vice president in 1971-72. He received the Outstanding Oklahoman Award in 1971. He served from 1970-72 on President Nixon's commission for hiring handicapped people and served on the commission for the Special Olympics of Oklahoma in 1970. He earned his CLU (certified life underwriters) in 1974 and was vice president of American Security Life of San Antonio. He was a 32nd degree member of the Order of Freemasons. His family owned and operated Bill's Military Surplus from 1979-2000 when he became disabled. Mr. Rhynes was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Hartzell, and infant son, Robert David. Mr. Rhynes is survived by his wife, Betty of the home; daughters, Sherri Goit and husband, Dan, of Wanette, Cathy Chouteau and husband, Mark, of Noble, and Rebecca King and husband, John, of Potomac Falls, Va.; grandchildren, Jacob, Justin and Jamie Goit, Braden and Britton Miller, Christi Thomas and husband, Tim, and Casey, Kelly and Billy Chouteau; and great-grandson, Jeremy Hanger. Bearers will be Mark and Billy Chouteau, Dan, Jacob and Justin Goit, Jeremy Hanger, John Wells King and Braden and Britton Miller. Honorary bearers will be Bill and Larry Green, Jim Hunter, Dr. Satish Kumar, Duke and Kenneth Rhynes, Allen Rose, Tim Thomas and the Oklahoma Jaycees.
