'Bob' Abernethy Jr. Funeral for retired Lt. Col. Robert J. "Bob" Abernethy Jr., 65, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church with R. Nathan Grantham, lay minister, officiating. Mr. Abernethy died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at a local hospital. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, under direction of Becker Funeral Home. He was born March 25, 1938, in Darby, Pa., to Robert J. Abernethy and Anne Fernsler Abernethy. He married Pat Nolen on Aug. 20, 1965, in Lawton. He graduated from Collingswood High School and Rutgers University as a second lieutenant. He advanced to lieutenant colonel, and served in Korea in 1963-64 and 1976-77, in Italy in 1966-68 and Vietnam in 1968-69. He received many awards including bronze stars with oak leaf clusters and the Vietnamese Honor Medal. He retired at Fort Sill in 1981. After attending Cameron University in Lawton, he taught physical education at Sheridan Road Elementary School from 1984 to 2001. He was a founder of the soccer program in Lawton, and coached soccer, baseball and basketball from 1976 to 1989. He attended First Christian Church and served as a deacon there. He was also a member of Kiwanis, AUSA. Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter, Janie Abernethy-Gant, Napa, Calif.; a son and daughter- in-law, John and Lori Abernethy, Norman; a sister and brother-in-law, Katharine and Robert Hutchinson, Reading, Pa.; five grandchildren: Brandon and Austin Gant and Christopher, Elizabeth and Anna Abernethy; a brother- in-law, Bill Nolen, La Grange, Texas; and eight nieces and nephews.
