Sgt. Kenneth Gerhart Ast, 71, Lawton, will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Post Cemetery, Fort Sill, with Curtis Newton, pastor, Trinity Assembly of God, officiating. Tech. Sgt. Ast died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at his home. Arrangements are by Becker Funeral Home. He was born Dec. 28, 1931, in Mount Hope, Kan., to Joe and Marie Ast. He married Vera Jean McKelvey in Las Vegas on Jan. 1, 1974. He served 25 years in the Air Force and 26 years for the United States Postal Service before retiring in 1999. He was a member of the APWU AFL-CIO union. Survivors include his wife, of the home; his mother, Marie Ast, Mount Hope; two daughters and sons-in-law: Teresa and Robert Bentz, Prump, Nev.; and Michell and Frank Russell, Portland, Ore.; a son-in-law, Rich Crider, Lawton; two stepchildren: Connie and Douglas Hanks, both of Nevada; six grandchildren: Brannon Wright, Douglas Hanks Jr., Charles Hanks, Maria Hanks, Christina Bentz, Sara Bentz; an adopted child, Christian Rivest Ast; two brothers: Manuel and Duane Ast, both of Mount Hope; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Annacleta and Melvin Manneback, Colwich, Kan.; Colette and Kemp Vanniman, Colorado; and Jelene and Dennis Grady, Wichita, Kan.; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two daughters: Karen and Christina Ast. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Veterans Center, 2326 E. Gore, Lawton 73501.
