Baxter Funeral for retired Master Sgt. Clifford F. Baxter, 88, Lawton, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist West with the Rev. Jamie Powell, pastor, officiating. Sgt. Baxter died Monday, July 4, 2005, at a local hospital. Burial with military honors will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker Funeral Home. He was born Feb. 8, 1917, in Billings, Mo., to Charles and Minnie Bailey Baxter. He came to Lawton in 1935, and enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 3, 1935. He served in Korea and World War II and retired at Fort Sill on April 30, 1956. While in the Army he served in the artillery and in food service. During World War II he served in North Africa and made the initial invasion into Salerno, Italy. He served in campaigns in Naples- Foggia, North Appennines, Rome-Arno and the Po Valley. He received the Arrowhead clasp for the campaign of Italy, the Good Conduct Ribbon with 4 clasp, four Bronze Stars, the American Defense Ribbon and the Pre-Pearl Harbor Ribbon. After his retirement, he worked civil service in kitchen equipment and served for 24 years. He then went to work for the Lawton Police Department in 1980 in charge of maintenance. He retired from the police department in 1987. He married Iva Murl Clift on March 4, 1939, in Anadarko. She died Sept. 25, 1998. He was a member of First Baptist West, Mount Scott Masonic Lodge No. 540, past master, Guthrie Scottish Rite Consistory, KCCH and Sojourners No.129. He was also a member of the Charity Chapter No. 507 O.E.S., past patron, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.5263. Survivors include three children and their spouses: Delores and Darrell Routh, Dwain and Kathy Baxter, and David and Donna Baxter, all of Lawton; nine grandchildren and their spouses: Susan and Ron Nance, Ryan Baxter and Taylor Baxter, all of Lawton; Sandra and Chris Sharkey, Cache; Regina and Mike Wilsey, and Christy and Todd Ryals, all of Fort Worth, Texas; Christina Vega, Nashville, Tenn.; Tricia Baxter, Altus; and Candice Scott, Kansas City, Mo.; six great-grandchildren: Whitney Nance, Brennon Nance, Justin Baxter, Ashlynn Ryals, Kristian Sharkey and Morgan Sharkey.
