Bynum, Sr. Age 73, Lawton, Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Tuesday in the First Baptist Church, Lawton, with Dr. Gary W. Cook, Pastor, officiating. Major Bynum died Friday in Lawton. Burial with full military honors will be in Post Cemetery, Fort Sill, under the direction of Becker Funeral Home. Major Bynum was born February 5, 1931 in Snyder, Texas to Leslie Ozro and Lola Gertrude (Moon) Bynum. He attended school in Snyder and graduated in 1948. He attended McMurry College in Abilene, Texas and played on a football scholarship. He graduated with a double Major in English and Physical Education. He married Marcelle Weems on September 3, 1949 in Rotan, Texas. He joined the Texas National Guard on his eighteenth birthday. In 1953 he joined the Army and attended the Basic Officers Training Course at Fort Sill, where he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant. The Majority of his tours where at Fort Sill, but he also served 2 tours in Germany, one in Vietnam, at Fort Hood, Texas and at Fort Carson, Colorado. He retired in 1973 at the rank of Major. Among the many services decorations he earned, where the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, WW II Occupation Medal (Germany), Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He was instrumental in the early development of Artillery Air Defense Systems, having fired the first Honest John Missle at Fort Sill. After attending the Army Language School in Monterey, CA, he was assigned as special advisor to the King of Thailand. Following his retirement from the Army, he obtained his Master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of Oklahoma in 1979. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lawton, and the Mt. Scott Masonic Lodge #540 in Lawton, Scottish Rite Temple of Guthrie. Survivors Include: Wife- Marcelle of the home. 5 Children: Dr. Donald K. Bynum, Jr. & wife Paige of Durham, NC, Cecil Glen Bynum & wife Cathey of Broken Arrow, OK, Michael Keith Bynum & wife Valerie of Springer, OK, Lucinda Marcelle Henry & husband Mark of Lawton, OK, and Lavonne Marlis Rushing & husband Uwe of Lawton, OK. 2 Brothers: Ramon Bynum & wife Mary Esther of Richardson, TX, and Lowell Bynum & wife Janey of San Marcos, TX. Sister: Elsie Muriel Jones & husband Jimmy of Lubbock, TX. Sister In-Law: Ann Bynum of Lancaster, TX. 10 Grandchildren: Patrick Bynum of Durham, NC, Pier Bynum of Durham, NC, Jeremy Glen Bynum of Broken Arrow, OK, Jennifer Lynn Bynum of Broken Arrow, OK, Amy Bynum Wisian & husband Joel of Lubbock, TX, Allen Michael Bynum & wife Emily of Springer, OK, Justin Daniel Henry of Lawton, Ok, Dillon Michael Henry of Lawton, OK, Thorsten Rushing of Lawton, OK and Stefan Rushing of Lawton, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Doyle Bynum.
