Joe was born February 9, 1939 in Lawton, Oklahoma, and as a very young child moved to California with his family. After attending local schools, he graduated from North High School in 1956, and that summer he enlisted in the United States Army. Joe completed basic training at Fort Ord, California. Joes tour of duty included serving his country in France and Germany. Joe traveled extensively throughout Europe prior to his discharge, enjoying Switzerland, Spain, England and Italy. Upon returning home to Bakersfield he started his career in the oil business. Joe was employed at Robert B. Doe Oilfield Service and Boler Well Service. Health problems forced Joe to take time out of his chosen career; however, he used that time to enroll at Bakersfield College where prior to his graduation he was consistently on the deans list. Upon graduation Joe was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation. Joe completed his career with Chevron Oil Company working in the Kern River and the Cymric areas in both the production and the drilling departments. The most important thing in Joes life was his immediate family. He loved being a husband, father and grandfather. During his sons childhoods, Joe enjoyed being involved in scouting, little league and later volunteered many hours to the South High School band. Joe was happy watching his grandchildren play both AYSO and club soccer as well as baseball. He was most proud of their school activities and achievements in scholastics as well as band and choir. The entire family has great memories of the traveling and vacations enjoyed in Hawaii, Lake Tahoe, and the entire east coast as well as our central coast. Joe and his sons also enjoyed deer hunting every October in Utah. Joe was a member of Caledonia Masonic Lodge #386 and prior to his illness he enjoyed the lodge activities. He was very proud of his masonic affiliation. Joe was a truly dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather, and friend. He was generous with his time and could be counted on for a helping hand. Joe leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife and best friend of 38 years, Florence Jeffie; his son, Kevin; his son, Shawn and daughter-in-law Carole and three beloved grandchildren, Joel, Kellie and Kyle. Joe also leaves his brother-in-law and best friend, John; three sisters, Charlene Sainz, Betty Rice and Loretta Brakebill and one brother as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and Vester Brakebill and two brothers, Jimmie and Bobby. Additionally, Joes father-in-law and very special friend will be waiting to welcome him. We will miss that wonderful smile and that indomitable spirit that never failed to amaze. Your courage knew no boundaries. Go gently and know that you are loved sweet man. Our family wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Optimal Hospice particularly Kyle Ray and Jeanne Hiost for their care and compassion during this most difficult time. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Shriners Crippled Childrens Hospital or Optimal Hospice. No visitation is scheduled.
