Simon Ybarra Burruel, 74, of Lawton, Oklahoma, was 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 13 at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel with Leo Martinez deacon, officiating. Rosary was said at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 12 at the funeral home. Mr. Burruel died Monday, March 10, 2003 at a local Lawton, OK hospital. Burial with military honors will be at Post Cemetery, Fort Sill. He was born October 30, 1929 in Tucson, Arizona to Simon and Apolonie Gonzales Burruel. He joined the U.S. Army on October 30, 1950 in Tucson and retired May 31, 1971 at Fort Dix, NJ after 21 years of service. He received many awards and decorations including Sharpshooter (Rifle), Army Occupaton Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal second and third award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, three Overseas Service Bars, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. After retirement from the Army, he made Lawton, OK his home and worked as a painter in Lawton and Comanche County. He was a Catholic. Survivors include his companion, Vera Maddox, Lawton, OK; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard Carlos and Melanie Burruel, Jasper, AL; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Judy and Mike Pierce, Parrish, AL; Barbara Taylor, Jasper, AL; and Linda Jean and Johnny Kilgore, Brookwood, AL; a brother, Jesus Ybarra (Olga) Burruel, Tucson; a niece, Teresa Neves, Lawton, OK; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grand- children; and 15 great-great-grand-children.
