Gerald D. Green, assistant chaplain, Hospice of Lawton Area, and the Rev. Charles Baggett, pastor, Immanuel Baptist Church, officiating. Mr. Cooper died Monday, March 17, 2003, at his home. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home. He was born on Sept. 15, 1925, in Helena, Ga., to Hubert Henry and Lillie Bell Locke Cooper. He grew up and attended school in Telfair County, Ga. He worked as a share cropper and taxi driver in Georgia, and was a roofer in Florida. He was drafted into the Army in 1953. Army awards he received include the Bronze Star with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal (first through third), National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Army Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Marksman Badge, Mechanic Qualification Badge and four Overseas Service Bars. He married Louise Cooper on April 28, 1967. After 20 years of service he retired on Sept. 1, 1973. After retiring from the military, he worked as a bagger at the Fort Sill Commissary. He later worked for Home Décor as an air conditioning technician and for the Pepsi Bottling Company in the maintenance department. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He is survived by three sons: Steve Cooper and his wife, Patricia, Roseville, Mich.; and Mark Jones and his fiancée, Phyllis Creel; and David "Bryan" Jones and his wife, Sharon, all of Lawton; a daughter, Lisa Myers and her husband Rick, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three brothers: Melvin Cooper and his wife, Constance, Milan, Ga.; and J.W. Cooper and his wife, Vivian; and Carl Cooper and his wife, Janetta, all of Macon, Ga.; a sister, Mazie Pruett and her husband Jimmy, Eastman, Ga.; and six grandchildren: Jennifer Martin, Stacey Cooper, Austin Tahsequah, Michael Jones, Ashley Jones and William Culler.
