All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Lawton Constitution 16 Nov 2003 Frederick "Smoky" Demarest Jr. BROKEN ARROW — Word has been received of the death of former Lawton resident Frederick Claire "Smoky" Demarest Jr., 79, Broken Arrow. Mr. Demarest died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, and a memorial service was held Oct. 14 in Broken Arrow. He was born on Oct. 14, 1923, in Huntington Park, Calif. He enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 31, 1940, and was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, during the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941. He was an aviation machinist. He served throughout the war on different carriers and received various promotions, including flight deck petty officer, chief petty officer and flight deck operational chief. He retired from the Navy in 1962 and went to work as a civilian aircraft technician for the military. He was a longtime resident of Lawton and Apache and was stationed at Fort Sill with ANSCOM. On Dec. 2, 1970, he married Norma Demarest. He was a member of the Last Man’s Club — Veterans of Pearl Harbor in Tulsa. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dale Earnest Demarest, Aberdeen, Md.; a daughter, Layne Darnell, Tigard, Ore.; a step-daughter, Jeannie Byrd, Lawton; a step-son, Randy Cannon, Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Comanche County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/comanche/comanche.html
