All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Rockville Cemetery--?? Hannigan, Jan Sept. 15, 1942 - Nov. 19, 2006 Jan Hannigan was an educator whose lessons from the classroom and from her soul will always guide us. Jan, 64, died with grace and dignity on Nov. 19, 2006, after a three-year battle with kidney cancer. Her husband and children shared Jan's last moments on earth with her and expressed their love as she passed into God's hands. She was an educator by nature and profession and enjoyed nothing more than sharing time with her six grandchildren. Children and students of all ages were Jan's life, and her greatest gift was improving people's lives through her love and dedication to education. Born at Fort Sill, Okla., Barbara JoAnne "Jan" Mape grew up in Menlo Park. She met her husband, Tom, in the fall of 1961 at the University of Santa Clara where she was in the first group of 100 women who entered the university. The couple was married at St. Raymond's Catholic Church in Menlo Park on June 1, 1963. While raising two children as Tom served in Vietnam, Jan earned her bachelor's degree in history from the University of Santa Clara. The family moved to Fairfield in 1966. Jan began work for the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District in 1972, teaching English as a second language to students at the Fairfield Adult School. While working full time as a teacher and raising her children, Jan earned her master's degree in education from the University of San Francisco. The school district named her Educator of the Week on Jan. 19, 1977. She was a teaching assistant principal from 1982-83 at the adult school, before spending two years as assistant principal at Green Valley Middle School. In 1985, Jan returned to the Fairfield-Suisun Adult School as principal where she made everlasting friendships with students from diverse backgrounds. Jan had a gift for assessing what a person needed to succeed and helping them achieve their goals. She helped build the school into a well-respected institution. As she wrote in her application for principal, "I played a part in formulating that reputation and would now like to lead the adult school in maintaining it." Her tireless efforts were noticed not only by the people whom she helped, but also by the professionals in her field. In 1995, Jan was honored as the Association of California School Administrators as Adult Education Administrator of the Year. Three years later in 1998, the California Council of Adult Education honored her with the Donald A. McCune Award for collaboration. Jan retired from the school district in 1999 after serving a year as the director of secondary education. Retirement gave her more time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed golf, playing bridge and watching the San Francisco Giants. She made needlepoint Christmas stockings for her grandchildren and was working on one for Elizabeth at the time of her death. Jan was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, the Association of American University Women, and had served on the Marine World Board of Directors. She traveled to China in March 1998 in a contingent of educational administration professionals as part of the Citizen Ambassador Program of People to People International. Her family and friends will always remember Jan as strong, intelligent, beautiful and fun loving. She loved to spend time at Lake Tahoe and liked to quote her father in saying "Wherever you traveled in the world, there is no place as beautiful as Lake Tahoe." The lake may never be as beautiful as when Jan was there. Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Tom; children, Erin (Randall Lesley) Hannigan of Vallejo, Matt (Kati Marie) Hannigan of San Jose, Bridget (Bob) Mackay of Petaluma; grandchildren, Justin and Katy Hannigan, Connor and Hannah Lesley, and Sarita and Elizabeth Mackay; Aunt Patricia "Patsy" (Lowell) Carothers; Aunt Catherine "DeDe" McGowan of Los Altos; brother, Vance (Alicia) Mape III of Newport Beach; sister, Andrea (John) Ross of Monte Sereno; and mother-in-law, Jeanne Rossi. Jan also leaves behind numerous loving cousins, nieces and nephews and an extensive network of loyal friends. Jan's parents, Vance and Helen Barbara Mape; and sister, Elizabeth Mape, predeceased her. Father Sebastian Meyer will preside at a rosary and Mass of Resurrection at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, 2700 Dover Ave., Fairfield. A reception will follow at the Green Valley Country Club. The family thanks Kaiser Hospice for its care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catherine Center, 50 North B St., San Mateo, 94401. Private burial will be at Rockville Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fairfield Funeral Home.
