Billy G. Harmon LAWTON - Retired 1st Sgt. Billy G. Harmon, 73, of Lawton, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in a Lawton hospital. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawton with the Rev. William F. Todd, senior pastor, and the Rev. Lynn E. Brack, senior pastor at First United Methodist Church of Weatherford, officiating. Inurement will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Post Cemetery on Fort Sill, with full military honors, under the direction of Becker Funeral Home of Lawton. Sgt. Harmon was born May 29, 1929, in Litwar, W. Va., where he grew up. He married Nancy C. Nellis on May 7, 1955, in Bayside, N.Y. He entered the Army in Wellington, Ohio. He went to Germany; Fort Totten, N.Y.; Formosa (Taiwan); Fort Sill; and Korea. He came back to Fort Sill before going to Vietnam. Following service in Vietnam, he went to Germany and then back to Fort Sill, retiring from the United States Army on June 30, 1971, after 21 years of service. Following his retirement he worked in construction for Southwest Acoustics. Later he worked as an inspector with the Post Engineers. He went to work with the Corp of Engineers as an inspector, working at Fort Sill and Wichita Falls, Texas. While he was in Wichita Falls he worked on the Holliday Creek Flood Control Contract. Later he worked for Eby Construction as an inspector on the same project. He also worked with Diggs Construction in Wichita, Kan., where they installed the security service at the airport in Wichita. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he was on the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Open Door Sunday School class and the United Methodist Men's Club. At one time he was a Scout Master with Boy Scouts. He was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Nancy, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Don Mealy of Corum; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Susan Harmon of Davis; and a grandson, Alex Mealy.
