Korpal Age 73, Lawton Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Philip Seeton, pastor officiating. General Korpal died Tuesday. Burial with full military honors will be in Post Cemetery, Fort Sill under the direction of Becker Funeral Home. A wake service will be at 7:00 PM Monday, July 4, 2005 at the funeral home chapel. Major General Eugene S. Korpal was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 1, 1931. He attended elementary and high schools in Vandalia, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in General Chemistry and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery. He married Lily M. Alder in July 1954. General Korpal's thirty four years of military service included a wide range of assignments in troop related, command and staff positions in Germany, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hawaii, and the continental United States. Troop related and Command assignments include Battery and Battalion level duties in Germany, Hawaii, Vietnam and Korea. He commanded B Battery, 593 FA in Germany, A Battery 3/38 FA in Korea; and was Battalion S-3 and Executive Officer of the 3/13 FA in Hawaii and Vietnam. Later troop and command assignments included Assistant G3 (Plans), 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam and command of two Battalions -1/29 FA 5th MECH DIV at Fort Carson, Colorado and 2/319 FA, 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. General Korpal later served as Assistant Division Commander of the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii and as Chief of the Joint Military Advisory Group in the Philippines. General Korpal served in the Field Artillery Branch Office of Personnel Operations in Washington D.C. and as a staff officer in both Headquarters U.S. Army Pacific and Headquarters United States Army Europe. Other Washington staff assignments included director of Personnel, Force Development and Training, U.S. Army Materiel Command and as Deputy Inspector General of the Army for Investigations, Assistance, Training and Information Management. The Korpals were no strangers to the Lawton/Fort Sill area, having had the good fortune to serve there for over nine years spanning four decades (mid 50's to mid 80's). Assignments included: Student Officer, the School Command (now 30th Regiment), Target Acquisition Department, Director of Training, Deputy Assistant Commandant, Assistant Commandant and Commanding General of Fort Sill and Commandant of the Field Artillery School as his final assignment. Service schools attended were the Field Artillery Basic, Battery Officer and Advanced courses; the Command and General Staff College; Armed Forces Staff College; and the Navy War College. Awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Clusters), Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Service Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), Vietnamese Gallantry Cross and Philippine Legion of Honor. After retirement in 1987, General Korpal was employed by the Fort Sill National Bank as a Vice President/Loan Officer, Advisory Director and Director. Survivors include his wife Lil, daughter Teresa and son-in-law Michael Weyand; daughter Jeannie and son-in-law Jack Byrnes; and four grandchildren, Matthew and Luke Weyand; Kevin and Jaclyn Byrnes.
