Layton Funeral for retired 1st Sgt. James L. Layton Sr., 70, Lawton, is pending with Becker Funeral Home. Sgt. Layton died Monday, April 21, 2003, at a local hospital. ========= Lawton Constitution 24 Apr 2003 James L. Layton Sr. Funeral Mass for retired 1st Sgt. 70, Lawton, will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Philip Seeton, pastor, officiating. Sgt. Layton died Monday, April 21, 2003 in a local hospital. Burial, with full military honors, will be in the Fort Sill Post Cemetery under direction of Becker Funeral Home. He was born Sept. 11, 1932, in Magee, Miss., to Ed J. and Emma M. Norton Layton. He enlisted in the Army in April 1949. He served in Korea, and had several tours in Vietnam. He received many awards including the Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge and the Bronze Star Medal. He was a military policeman, and one of the first drill sergeants in the Army. He married Patricia A. Olson in Fort Hood, Texas, on Feb. 1, 1957. She died March 28, 1996. He retired from the Army in January 1974, after 24 years. He then worked at several businesses in Lawton until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: James L. Jr. and Julie Layton, Prattville, Ala.; and Richard K. and Tapale Layton, Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters: Mary M. Vaughan, Cushing; and Diana L. Atwell, Lawton; a former son-in-law, Mark Atwell, Lawton; three sisters: Marie Kraft, Patsy Latimer and Linda Hurlbert, all of Gulfport, Miss.; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Ken and Liz Kraft, Caulfield, Mo. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Fink. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, PO Box 53303, Oklahoma City 73152.
