Mayo Age 83, Lawton - Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Phil Jones, officiating. Mr. Mayo died Thursday in Lawton. Burial with full military honors will be in Post Cemetery, Fort Sill. He was born to Frank and Mildred Mayo in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, on September 4, 1922. His family moved to Putney, Vermont, when he was young. He married Wanza C. Jones on June 2, 1949 at Wichita Falls, Texas. She preceded him in death on August 16, 1996. When World War II started he was attending Castleton Teachers College in Vermont, where he played on the varsity basketball team. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 2, 1942 and was given an honorable discharge on July 29, 1943 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. On July 30, 1943 he was appointed as Warrant Officer Assistant Department of Communication with the 254th Infantry, 63rd Infantry Division. He was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer on July 15, 1944. In November of 1948 he was appointed into Regular Army. In 1952 the Army sent him to RCA Institute in New York to attend a course in advanced electronic technology. He was an honor graduate in 1955. During active duty he received many decorations and medals to include the Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the European Theatre of Operations and three Battle Stars. He was promoted to CW4 in 1959 and retired December 31, 1962 and his service assignment terminated November of 1972. In March of 1963 he joined Waddell and Reed, Inc. a financial services company, and became sales manager and remained until his retirement in 1993. He was a life member of the Optimist Club and active in many other civic organizations. He served as director of Comanche County Alliance for Children and Youth, Fort Sill Museum Association, Fort Sill Half Section and the Knife and Fork Club. He loved ballroom dancing and traveling. Survivors include a daughter and son in law, Pamela and Rick Kerr, Lawton; two grandchildren, Christina Russell and husband Terrell, Guam, and Alexis Romeros, Lawton; a step grandson, Doug Beach and his mother, Shirley Pearson, both of Lawton; a brother and sister in law, Glendon and Kate Mayo, Connecticut; and a special friend, Anita Matoon, Lawton. His stepson, Lyle Peters, preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Oklahoma, P.O.
