Mendez, 80, formerly of Dalhart, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in Houston. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Hass Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Mendez was born in Lawton, Okla. He grew up between Dalhart and Boise City, Okla. From 1940 until 1945, he served with the Army Corp of Engineers in the South Pacific as a master sergeant. He served in the National Guard from 1945 until 1954. He married Dorothy Mae Brady in 1945. He retired as a mechanic at Felty Chevrolet in 1993. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War and was a member of the Lion's Club. A 32nd Degree Mason, he was a member of the Rock Island Masonic Lodge No. 869 and the Lubbock Scottish Rite. He also was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Dalhart. Mr. Mendez was a Houston resident at the time of his death. Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Mendez of Austin and Dr. Thom Mendez of Houston; a daughter, Laura Mendez of Houston; and four sisters, Lucille Springer of New Braunfels, Vera Glasco of Vinita, Okla., Irene Cook of Canyon Lake and Julia Murray of Glendale, Ariz. The family suggests memorials be to Louis P. Mendez Scholars Fund, c/o Del Fullen, attorney-at-law, 2001 Kirby Suite 1011, Houston, TX 77019. The family will be at 10402 Knoboak Drive, Houston, TX 77043.
