Col. Peter Atley Maurek, 72, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Old Post Chapel with Chaplain Lt. Col. Allen Stahl officiating. Lt. Col. Maurek died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at his home. Arrangements are by Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home. He was born Dec. 13, 1931, in Clinton, Iowa, to Atley and Charlotte Spicer Maurek. He grew up and graduated from high school in Clinton in 1949. He married Mary Joan Houser on Dec. 27, 1954, in Clinton, Iowa. He enlisted in the Army on Aug. 24, 1953, and retired on Sept. 30, 1973. He served in Korea, Vietnam, Germany and several stateside locations. He came to Lawton in December 1968 to serve as an adviser at the George D. Keathley Army Reserve Center until his retirement. His Army awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (second Oak Leaf Cluster), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, 2 Combat Service Stripes, Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Bridge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star (first Oak Leaf Cluster), and Meritorious Unit Commendation. Following his military serve, he graduated from Cameron University with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. He graduated in 1978 from Oklahoma State University with a master's of science degree. He taught at Sullivan Village Elementary School from 1978 until his retirement in 1988. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons: Gregory and Peter Maurek, both of Lawton; two daughters: Marta Moore, Norman; and Heidi Maurek, Austin, Texas; a brother, Gary Maurek, Westminster, Colo.; two sisters: Carol Kelly, Winnetka, Ill.; and Kristen Quinn, Gaithersburg, Md.; and five grandchildren: Kirsten and Kathleen Moore, Reagan and Rebecca Clanton and Blayde Alban.
