Mrs. Merritt died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Charlotte, N.C. ========= Lawton Constitution 24 Apr 2003 Almeta Hill Merritt Funeral for Almeta Hill Merritt, 88, Lawton, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tom Willoughby, associate pastor, First Baptist Church, and Dr. Jeffrey J. Jeremiah, pastor, First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Renton, Wash., officiating. Mrs. Merritt died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Charlotte, N.C. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery. She was born June 28, 1914, in Cache, and grew up on a farm west of Lawton. She attended school in Cache, and married Virgil Merritt in 1941. He died in 1981. She held several civil service positions at Fort Sill during World War II. After the war, she accompanied her husband on military assignments to Fort Polk, La.; Japan; France; and Germany. She later resumed her civil service career, and retired from a position at Reynolds Army Community Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church, and involved in the Prime Timers Choir. She was also a member of the Pioneer Women's Club of Lawton. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sara Beth and retired Col. Paul A. Coughlin, Charlotte; two granddaughters: Cynthia Jeremiah, Renton; and Linda Elam, Charlotte; a grandson, Paul A. Coughlin Jr., Charlotte; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Benjamin and Margaret Elizabeth Watkins Hill; seven brothers: Tommy, Connie, Bill, Albert, Avon, James and Eugene Hill; and two sisters: Lillie Cain and Bertie Shrum. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Southwest 5th Street and B Avenue, Lawton 73501. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and the family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
