Nettles Funeral for retired Sgt. Walter L. Nettles, 77, Lawton, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. C.W. Whitlow, pastor, officiating. Sgt. Nettles died Thursday, June 23, 2005. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery under direction of Jefferson Funeral Home. He was born March 20, 1928, in Tunnel Springs, Ala., to Callie Nettles and Charlie Cole. He was a member of Amithy Baptist Church in Tunnel Springs until he joined the Army in 1952. He retired in 1975 after 23 years of service. He awards include the Good Conduct Medal (7th award), the United Nations Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, four Overseas Bars, the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (two awards), the Distinguished Unit Citation, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and several other commendations. He retired from Goodyear in 1994. He was a member of the VFW and AARP. Survivors include his wife, Vernell, of the home; seven children: Elizabeth Cotton, Florida; Tarra Gilbert and husband Edmond; Debra Adams, Pat Paige, Elaine Sanders, Walter M. Nettles and wife Doris, all of Lawton; Tony Nettles, Oklahoma City; 17 grandchildren: Latoya Royster and Michell Davis, both of Florida; Keisa V. Haskins, Tye Roberson, Tameshia Roberson, Jennifer Scott, James Scott, Christopher Nettles, Morris Sanders, Jordan Nettles, all of Lawton; Andrew L. Haskins III and Demetrius Nettles, both of Oklahoma City; Jammel McCray, Frederick; Stephanie McCray, Tennessee; Jamel Harris, Texas; Dina Paige, Langston; 10 great-grandchildren: Jalal Royster, Marcus, Isadore, Kedrick Davis, all of Florida; Micah Thomas, Vashala Phillips, Jacara McCray, Zaedrion, McCray, Dalicia Scott, all of Lawton; I'yanna Farlow, Tennessee; a brother, Clarence, Detroit, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and three grandchildren. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
