Robert Ray Norwood, 69, Lawton, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Gary E. Bender officiating. Omega service by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will be from 7-8 p.m. today at Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel. Maj. Norwood died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at a local hospital. Burial will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery. He was born July 19, 1935, in Austin, Texas, to Vincent Norwood and Laura McGarrity. He graduated from Anderson High School in Austin, Texas, in 1954. He came to Lawton in 1963 from Tacoma, Wash. He married Rosa Leonard on Dec. 8, 1963, in Lawton. He served more than 14 years in civil service at Fort Sill and held positions as the Chief of Training Division and Chief of Central Taskings. He managed a Marriott Hotel in Dallas and Kansas City, Mo., for more than a year. He enlisted in the Army in December 1956 and was commissioned in October 1963. His duty assignments included Germany, two Vietnam tours, Japan and various posts in the United States. He served 21 years and five months. He was recognized for more than 35 years of service to the government of the United States. His military awards and honors include the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Technical Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, (first OLC), Bronze Star Medal (first OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation (with Palm), Meritorious Unit Citation, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and the Usher Board and a life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Survivors include his wife, of the home; seven children: Eulse Cee Young, New Orleans; Laura Jean Norwood and Arlette Ramona Harris, both of Lawton; Melissa Dora Norwood, Kansas City, Mo.; and Vincent Anthony Norwood, Michael Charles Norwood and Paul Edward Norwood, all of El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Van Anthony Norwood.
