Mrs. Pawai died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, in Lawton. ========= Lawton Constitution 2 May 2003 Carolyn Darnell "Kuuipo" Pawai Funeral for Carolyn Darnell "Kuuipo" Pawai, 53, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church with Deacon Pete Delcamara officiating. A rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Mrs. Pawai died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at her home. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery. She was born April 1, 1950, in Papakolea, Hawaii, to William K. Burgess and Julia Waiola Machado. She grew up in Hawaii, and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Honolulu in 1968. She married Hiram Olival Pawai on Nov. 26, 1966, in Honolulu. He died Nov. 18, 1987. She worked as a waitress at Sloop John B's Ewa Beach in Hawaii for 10 years. She came to Lawton in 1989. She worked at Denny's Restaurant from 1989 to 1996. She had worked at Furr's Cafeteria since 1996. She also worked for Comanche Nation Games. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Derrick "Olival" Pawai and Rhonda Buentipo; three daughters and sons-in-law: Michelle "Kuuipo" and Donald Brown Sr., Darnell "Kehaulani" and Steven Cotton, and Dutchess "Uilani" Pawai and Otis Graham, all of Lawton; a brother, Elwood Machado, Kauai, Hawaii; two sisters: Louise A. Terry, Hawaii; and Brenda Burgess, Hawaii; a sister-in-law, Winifred Burgess, Lawton; 14 grandchildren: Hanai-Noah "Kapono" Heanu, Travis Kaipo Vega, Stanley Hew-len, Starsha Hew-len, Nohelani McShane Pawai, Derricka Pawai, Derrick Pawai Jr., Shaniqua Brown, Donald Brown Jr., Garret Pawai, Nickilas Cotton, Camry Cotton, Justin Jeremy Cotton and Chantilly Graham Pawai. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William K. Burgess Jr.; and two grandsons: Trenton Cotton and Jordan Pawai.
