Poythress Funeral for Alfred Durell "A.D." Poythress, 83, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Wayne Ashlock, pastor, officiating. Mr. Poythress died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at a local care center. Entombment will be at the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, Sunset Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home. He was born February 15, 1921, in Chapel Hill, N.C., to Robert Furman and Ila Josie Barnes. He grew up and graduated from Chapel Hill High School. He later attended Kings Business College. He joined the Navy on May 5, 1942. He served aboard ships in the Atlantic and the Pacific, where he survived the sinking of the U.S.S. John Penn. He had further assignments in the Pacific Theater. He married Katy Nell Standley on Feb. 3, 1946, in Grandfield. She died Jan. 3, 1997. He and his wife entered the University of Oklahoma School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1949. He was employed by E.R. Squibb and Sons Drug Manufacturing as a special sales representative. He retired in 1983. He was a member of the First Christian Church for more than 50 years, where he had served as an elder and a deacon. He was associated with the Elks Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include a son, Stan L. Poythress, Lawton; a daughter, Kathy S. Bentley and husband Elbert, Lawton; a brother, Marvin L. Poythress, Chapel Hill; and four grandchildren: Leigh Ann Bolin and her husband Eric, Ada; Lindsey Poythress, Durant; Kelly Bentley, Lawton; and Lennon Yeats, Lawton; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Bolin, Ada. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and a brother, Robert Poythress.
