Mrs. Pewewardy died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at a local hospital. ========= Lawton Constitution 9 Dec 2003 Lorene Kerchee Pewewardy ELGIN — Funeral for Lorene Kerchee Pewewardy, 69, Elgin, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Sill Indian School Gym with the Rev. Bill Foote officiating. A prayer service will be from 7-9 p.m. today at Fort Sill Indian School Gym. Mrs. Pewewardy died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at a Lawton hospital. Burial will be at Otipoby Cemetery at Fort Sill under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home. She was born Sept. 1, 1934, to Walter and Lottie Fisher Kerchee. She graduated from Fort Sill Indian School in 1953. She later attended Cameron State College, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree. She was a teacher's aide at Elgin Public School for five years. She was director of food distribution for the Comanche Tribe for 17 years, and for the National Indian Council of Aging for one year. She was a member of the Oklahoma Old Time War Dance Association, and the Fort Sill Indian School Alumni. She married Herald S. Pewewardy on Sept. 1, 1954 at Petarsey Church. Survivors include her husband of the home; six daughters: Debra and Cheryl Pewewardy and Lynna and Nico Rosario, all of Lawton; Geneva Pewewardy and Steven Dorsey, Shawnee; and Diane Pewewardy and Patricia Pewewardy and Leonard Mathis, all of Elgin; three adopted sons: Richard Henson, Norman; Eddie Mahseet, Apache; and Freddy Banderas, Lawton; an adopted daughter, Linda Minthorn, Elgin; three sisters: Berdina Lopez, Cache; Belva Lopez, Geronimo; and Betty Crocker, Lawton; three brothers: Walter Kerchee Jr., Melvin Kerchee Sr. and Wallace Coffey, all of Lawton; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many other family members.
