Shipp, an Oklahoma native who died Friday of pneumonia after 65 years in her adopted home of Sonoma County. Shipp was 96. Born in Lawton, Okla., Shipp raised her family first in Healdsburg, moving to Santa Rosa in 1942. After her husband, Sanford Noland Shipp, died 35 years ago, she moved to a Morgan Street apartment building and managed it until she was 86, said her daughter Rita Robinson of Santa Rosa. She lived on her own until she was 94, remaining active in a variety of clubs and involved with hosts of friends. "She was a very special person," Robinson said. "She had so many friends, and she was involved with a lot of groups and people. She had seven children and her family was just very important to her." Many of Shipp's 26 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren will be traveling from around the United States to Shipp's funeral Tuesday, Robinson said. "They truly loved her," she said. Shipp was a charter member and past president of the First Christian Church in Santa Rosa, and also held memberships in the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 21, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, War Mothers and Pythian Sisters. She also was past president of the Navy Mothers Club. Besides Robinson, she is survived by four other daughters, Barbara L. Leahy of Santa Rosa, Verla M. Ryan of Tehachapi, and Nettie Gayle Berry and Lucy Elaine Davis, both of Indiana; and a son, Sanford Noland Shipp Jr., of Watsonville. She was preceded in death by another son, Thomas Shipp of Healdsburg. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eggen & Lance Mortuary in Santa Rosa. Interment will follow in the Veterans' Lawn Section of Santa Rosa Memorial Park. Friends and family members may visit at the mortuary from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday. Contributions in Shipp's memory may be made to the First Christian Church, 1835 W. Steele Lane, Santa Rosa 95403. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Comanche County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/comanche/comanche.html
