'Ed' Schlapbach Dec. 17, 1925 - May 26, 2002 Funeral for Dr. Edwin A. "Ed" Schlapbach, 76, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Frankye Johnson, pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Joe F. Stewart, former associate pastor, officiating. Dr. Schlapbach died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at a local hospital. Burial with military honors will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker Funeral Home. He was born Dec. 17, 1925, in the Pleasant View community near Ponca City to Edwin A. Schlapbach Sr. and Nora Shaw Schlapbach. He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1944. He was drafted into the Army in May 1944. He served with the Rainbow Division. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war in January 1945 at Stalag 9 near Bad Orb, Germany. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for Rhineland, Central Europe Campaign; European- African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Combat Infantry Badge; Rifleman Sharpshooter; Good Conduct Medal; and the Oklahoma Cross of Valor. He was awarded an honorable discharge in November 1945. He graduated from Northern Oklahoma Junior College at Tonkawa in 1947. He graduated from Southern College of Optometry in June 1950. He practiced optometry in Ponca City, Bartlesville and Lawton 46 years. He moved to Lawton in 1955 and continued his practice until his retirement in 1998. He married Margie Lewis on May 26, 1956, in Lawton. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the adult discussion class; a member and past president of the Lawton Noon Lions Club, where he served on the eye bank and other committees; a member of the Oklahoma and American Optometric Associations; and was a past president of the Eisenhower Elementary School PTA. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law: Kim and Bill Whiteley and Sandra and Terry Johnson, all of Lawton; two grandsons: Zachary Johnson and Ryan Whiteley, both of Lawton; a brother and sister-in-law, Murel and Martha Schlapbach, Huntsville, Ala.; six sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
