Simmons CACHE Lawrence E. Simmons, 80, longtime resident of Cache, passed away at his home on Sept. 6, 2004, after a short illness. Graveside rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in the Veterans Field of Honor with the Revs. Terry Oates, Lawton, and Don Barnes, pastor of First Assembly of God, Lawton, officiating. Burial with military honors will be under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home. He was born on April 22, 1924, in Kaw to Milton George and Laura Freeman Simmons. He graduated from Daugherty High School. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines in 1943 then was drafted into the Navy on April 27, 1944. He served in the Pacific Theatre on the SS Simon Bolivar where he earned Point Systems, Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medals. He was discharged on May 26, 1946, in Norman. After being discharged he attended Cameron College and graduated in 1950. He then attended Oklahoma State University. Mr. Simmons retired from Civil Service after serving as a machinist at Fort Sill for 33 years. After retirement from Civil Service he was employed by Lawton Public Schools for five years. He married Colleen Bishop on Sept. 22, 1951, in Duncan. They resided in the Cache area their entire married lives. They were blessed with the birth of four children: Rickey Dan and wife Jo Lynn, Wasilla, Ark.; Rhonda Deanne and husband Rick Mahaffey, Lawton; Susan Ranelle and husband Paul Hill, Cache; and Timothy Todd and wife Kathleen of San Diego, Calif. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Brian Griffitts and Chad and wife Leigh Ann Pollock, all of Lawton; Tathena Griffitts, Memphis, Tenn.; Eleanor Simmons, San Diego; and Emily and husband Ivan Maker, and Dan Hill, all Oklahoma City; Three great-granddaughters: Taylor, Mickayla, and Allison; and many extended family members. He is also survived by a sister, Lela Bilbrey, Cache; and an aunt Thelma Callicott, Lawton. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
