Scherler Age 69, Lawton, Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Lawton, with Rev. Philip Seeton, Pastor, officiating. Mr. Scherler died Saturday at his home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Lawton, under the direction of Becker Funeral Home. A Wake service will be held at 7:00 pm Friday in the Becker Funeral Home Chapel. John was born in Lawton on June 14, 1935. He grew up in Lawton and Chicago. In 1956 he married Billie Preisch in Lawton. She died in 1985. In 1987 he married Virginia Shaw in Lawton. He worked with Commercial Credit in Lawton, and then moved to Durant with AETNA, then returned to manage the AETNA office in Lawton. He worked with Security National Bank in Enid, and while working there he attended and graduated from the Louisiana School of Banking. He again returned to Lawton to work at American National Bank. While in Lawton, he earned his Oklahoma Real Estate License, and worked for Clover Realty. He served on numerous committees and held various offices before being named Realtor of The Year for Lawton, OK. He served on numerous committees for the Oklahoma Board of Realtors, and he contributed to writing a standardized contract for Oklahoma Realtors. At the time of his death he was a licensed real estate appraiser and was teaching real estate classes at three locations including the Great Plains Technology Center in Lawton. John was very active with the Jaycees, and was the Lawton Jaycee Spoke and Sparkplug Award Winner. He later became Oklahoma JCI Senator #9802 and Lifetime Member #002. He held many local offices including President of the Lawton Jaycees. In addition he held District and Regional Director Positions on the state level for the Oklahoma Jaycees. He took the Lawton chapter to the highest rank ever received in Lawton Jaycee history. John participated in the Holy City Easter Pageant for over 40 years. For much of this time he served as director and narrator. He was known as “The Voice of the Easter Pageant”. As a Member of Holy Family Catholic Church, he served as Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Member of the Parish Council. He is survived by his wife of the home, one Son Jay G.W. Scherler Jr. and his wife Krista of Waco, TX. 5 Daughters, Terri Claggett and husband Larry of Oklahoma City, Shelly Shilling and husband Rick of Frisco, TX, Kara Niles and husband Brett of San Antonio, TX, Aleta Boyer and husband Jeff of Coral Springs, FL and Carol Kavanagh Tye and husband Ross of Chico, CA. 8 Grandchildren, Willie Scherler, Layne Claggett, Ashley Verdin, Conner Phariss, Jennifer Cook and Joshua Clinton, Jessica and Rachael Frank. 2 Sisters, Gertrude Kirkpatrick of Tacoma, WA and Esther Suttle of Lawton, and a Brother Arnold E. Scherler, Jr. of Seattle, WA.He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 Sisters, Helen Pettit, Barbara Scherler and Karolene Scherler.
