He died on January 3, 2011 in Lawton, Oklahoma at the age of 87. Clarence spent his young life in Western Oklahoma and in the Phoenix area of Arizona. He joined the Army in 1940 in Phoenix and was first stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas with the horse cavalry. Working with the horses was one of the more enjoyable periods of his life. He began his miliary service as an enlisted soldier where he rose through the ranks to include First Sergeant. While serving in the Pacifcic Area during WWII, he received a field commission and retired after twenty years with the rank, of Major. He served with the First Calvary Division throughout WWII and later throughout the Korean War. After retiring from the military, Clarence attended college receiving a degree in science with the honor of being listed in Who's Who as outstanding science major and later he earned a Master's Degree in education. He worked a few years in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refugee before beginning a twenty-year career as a science teacher at Eisenhower High School. He was a natural born teacher who spent many of his career years teaching young people-first in training battalions in the army and later teaching students in a science classroom. His military medals include the Silver Star, four Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, the Army Commendation Medal and fifteen lesser medals. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John, and a sister, Goldia. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 64 years, Alice Jones Shay; his two children, Iris Dates of Dallas, Texas, and his son, Clarence Raymond Shay, Jr. of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Jeffery Dates of New York, Jennifer Dates Marlar and her husband Nicholas of Victor, Idaho, Andrew Shay and Matthew Shay both of Corpus Christi, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Heart Association or to a favorite charity of choice.
