Thrash Funeral for retired Command Sgt. Maj. Fred M. Thrash, 74, Lawton, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with the Rev. Don Howard, pastor, officiating. Sgt. Maj. Thrash died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at a local hospital. Entombment with military honors will be at Chapel of Peace Mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker Funeral Home. He was born Dec. 17, 1928, in Brundidge, Ala., to Hilliary David and Maude Ethel Head Thrash. He enlisted in the Army in January 1947. He married Vere Herzogon May 7, 1948, in Copperas Cove, Texas. He served twice in Germany, twice in Korea and once in Vietnam. Awards he received include the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, 2 overseas bars, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), Army Commendation Medal with first oak leaf cluster and the Meritorious Service Medal. He retired Jan. 31, 1973. After retirement, he worked at Fort Sill Federal Credit Union and at Postel Finance as a loan officer. He also worked at Montgomery Wards for 10 years in the auto parts department. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church for 23 years, serving as an elder and a trustee. He was also a member of the Optimist Club. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Fred M. Thrash II, Oklahoma City; and Terry L. and Charlotte Thrash, Kamay, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie Thrash and Jim McGoodwin, Edmond; and Candy and Bob Wolken, Littleton, Colo.; two sisters: Lucille Barker, Lansing, Mich.; and Pauline Franklin, Phenix City, Ala.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; Bertram and Clarence; and two sisters: Florence and Mattilou.
