Thrash, 74, Lawton, will be at 1:00 PM Saturday in the Holy Cross Lutheran Church with Rev. Don Howard, Pastor, officiating. Sergeant Major Thrash died Wednesday in a local hospital. Entombment with full military honors will be in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home. He was born December 17, 1928 in Brundidge, Alabama to Hilliary David and Maude Ethel (Head) Thrash. He enlisted in the Army in January of 1947. He married Vere Herzog in Copperas Cove, Texas on May 7, 1948. He served twice in Germany, twice in Korea and once in Vietnam. He received numerous awards including the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, 2 Overseas Bars, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster and the Meritorious Service Medal. Sergeant Major Thrash retired on January 31, 1973. After retirement, he worked at the Fort Sill Federal Credit Union and at the Postal Finance as a loan officer. He also worked at Montgomery Wards for 10 years in the auto parts department. He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church for 23 years, serving as an elder and a trustee. He was also a member of the Optimist Club. Survivors include his wife, of the home; 2 sons and daughter-in-law, Fred M. Thrash II, of Oklahoma City; and Terry L. Thrash and Charlotte, of Kamay, Texas; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Connie Thrash McGoodwin and Jim, of Edmond and Candy Wolken and Bob, of Littleton, Colorado; 2 sisters, Lucille Barker, of Lansing, Michigan and Pauline Franklin, of Phenix City, Alabama; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. His parents, 2 brothers, Bertram and Clarence; and 2 sisters, Florence and Mattilou, preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Building Fund, 2105 NW 38th, Lawton, OK 73505.
